Our Heritage
We are grateful to many teachers that have guided our instructors on the path of Aikido.

Hayato Osawa
CAF Technical Director
Hayato Osawa Sensei, 8th Dan Shihan from Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo, serves as the Technical Director of the Canadian Aikido Federation. He brings deep experience in traditional Aikido and regularly teaches at national events like the CAF Summer Camp and Fall Seminar, helping maintain high technical standards across affiliated dojos, including Fudoushin Aikido.

Yukio Kawahara
Former CAF Technical Director
Yukio Kawahara Shihan (1940–2011) was a pivotal figure in the establishment and flourishing of Aikido in Canada. As an 8th dan Shihan and the official representative of Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Canada, he dedicated over 36 years to teaching across the nation, tirelessly spreading the art with clarity, precision, and a profound respect for traditional practice. Sensei was instrumental in building the Canadian Aikido Federation into a cohesive, national organization and served as its first Technical Director, shaping not only its technical standards but its spirit of sincerity and discipline. On a personal level, Sensei’s patient guidance, exacting emphasis on fundamentals, and genuine commitment to his students profoundly guided my own development in Aikido as a true budo. His legacy endures in the countless lives he touched, the standards he set, and the Canadian Aikido community he helped forge.

Yumi Nakamura
Founder of Tendokai Aikido
Yumi Nakamura Shihan (1948–2024) was a foundational pillar of Aikido in Canada, whose commitment to teaching, mentorship, and organizational leadership helped shape the Canadian Aikido Federation for more than four decades. As a 7th dan Shihan, she earned respect both nationally and internationally for her tireless work, warm spirit, and high technical standards. On a personal level, Sensei’s guidance and example profoundly influenced my approach to Aikido — her insistence on sincerity, her generosity toward students of all ranks, and her gracious presence will continue to inspire my training and teaching. Her legacy lives on in the community she helped build and in the many lives she touched across this country, including many of the instructors at our dojo.
